Holy Grass, Sweet Vernal-grass, Heath plants, Wood
approx. 220 x 140 x 120 cm

Using nature-based materials, my aim is to connect to the human body and human history of culture and making. Our use of natural materials has reshaped our landscapes and natural surroundings and materials and sculptures can trigger tactile memory, storytelling and forgotten knowledge.

Holy grass (Hierochloe odorata) is a very hardy perennial, able to grow in the Arctic Circle. The plant has a long history of use in spiritual and medicinal practices, and is within many cultures regarded as a sacred plant. Its medicinal powers have been put to use as a remedy for a variety of ailments, including digestive issues, headaches, and fever. When ingested as a drink, or burned (smudged), it is said to clear the body and mind from bad spirits and negative energies. The distinctive scent is sweet, pleasant and strong and may attract the good spirits.
