Nesströnd, Vestfirðir, Iceland

Turf from Tröllatunga, Iceland
approx. 300 x 350 x 350 cm

Analog Medium Format Photograph

Turf contains layers of time, culture, and history. Working with this material, you are in direct contact with Icelandic cultural history where peat and turf have historically been life-saving materials for the inhabitants on this barren island. Turf is still used as a building material in Iceland and the technical knowledge, as well as the knowledge about the cultural meaning, remains alive.

Using an archaeological approach, I investigate the material, traditional building techniques, and the cultural landscape of Vestfirðir. Rather than being romanticized, working on-site in the Icelandic landscape makes you very aware of former generations hardships and trials and how exposed one can be when subjected to nature’s indifference to your well-being.

Using natural materials that change over time, rot, grow, or dissolve, creates many possibilities for me as well as many problems. Since I don't expect the works to last, I allow myself to be in the moment and go wherever the material and the site takes me in terms of form, expression, and feeling. When I am finished, I make an analog photograph, which marks the end of my exploration with the specific piece. The photography is the proof of the events that have taken place.
